Important Information on Employment Scams

Contractor employment scams

NeighborWorks America has been contacted by independent contractors and freelancers who were targeted by people impersonating NeighborWorks America staff or NeighborWorks network organization employees. In these schemes, scammers post fake contract opportunities on job sites, then communicate with applicants while posing as NeighborWorks America or NeighborWorks network staff. In some cases, contractors even complete assignments based on false promises of payment. Eventually, the scammers attempt to obtain personal information such as bank account details or other sensitive data.

These scams are not affiliated with NeighborWorks America or any NeighborWorks network organization. We are concerned about the impact on contractors who are eager to work with us and want to help protect them from fraud.

If you believe you have been targeted

  • Do not share bank account numbers, Social Security numbers or other sensitive personal information with anyone claiming to represent NeighborWorks America in response to an unsolicited opportunity.
  • Do not send money, purchase equipment with a promise of reimbursement or process payments on behalf of someone claiming to be from NeighborWorks America.
  • Save emails, messages, contracts and screenshots related to the suspected scam.

If you are an independent contractor who believes you have been scammed or approached by someone fraudulently claiming to represent NeighborWorks America, please contact Bill Cameron at [email protected] so we can document the activity.

You also should:

  • Report the scam to the platform where you saw the posting.
  • Consider filing a report with your local law enforcement agency and with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.FTC.gov.

NeighborWorks America will continue to monitor these reports and take appropriate steps to protect contractors and our reputation.
