As a result, the people who walk through her door needing housing help often wait until they've exhausted every possible resource. "They go into credit card debt. They empty their savings. And when people come knocking on the door to shut off the lights or take the house away, that's when they finally look for help."

Houston resident Alex Zelaya wanted to purchase a home and stop paying rent. But with rising real estate prices, he wasn't sure what he would be able to afford. He began working with a real estate agent, who told him about the NeighborhoodLIFT program, a collaboration between NeighborWorks America and Wells Fargo that provides down payment assistance and homebuyer education to qualified homebuyers.

The Housing Stability Counseling Program (HSCP) was designed to support families and individuals who are facing foreclosure, eviction or homelessness as a result of pandemic-related economic fallout. NeighborWorks America was charged with implementing the $100 million program as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

One by one, NHS of Baltimore is turning abandoned houses in the Panway and Walbrook neighborhoods of West Baltimore into homes for new homebuyers.
