As a growing epidemic in the U.S., social isolation and loneliness increase a person’s risk of premature death, is associated with increased risk of dementia, and can lead to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.

Between September 2018 and August 2019, NeighborWorks brought together five organizations to explore approaches to challenges in rural areas with the overarching goal of field building, working collectively to tease out best practices, improve outcomes and present learnings to inform efforts in the NeighborWorks network and the community development and rural fields.

As part of our rural initiative, we outlined best practices in rural rehab construction management that categorize, analyze and correlate diverse rehab management practices gathered from rural housing rehab organizations across the United States.

Recognizing the importance of rehab work for housing preservation and the difficulty of running a sustainable rehab line of business, we gathered a cross-section of experts from our network to form a year-long rural rehab task force. They provided recommendations on how NeighborWorks can better support rehab in training, technical assistance and resource allocation.
