NeighborWorks America CEO Receives Dream of Equality Award from Asian Americans for Equality

New York , NY – NeighborWorks America Chief Executive Officer Eileen M. Fitzgerald was recently presented with the 2012 Dream of Equality award at Asian Americans for Equality’s (AFEE) 38th Annual Lunar Year Celebration. The award is given annually to an individual who has done outstanding work to improve housing, education and economic development for families. More than 800 guests attended this year’s ceremony, including many prominent New York City elected officials, such as Representative Nydia Velasquez, New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, as well as leaders from business, finance and the community.

In presenting the award to Fitzgerald, Board President Wendy Takahisa, Executive Director, Global Sustainable Finance, Morgan Stanley, said: “AAFE can attest first-hand to the tremendous spirit of partnership and leadership that NeighborWorks brings to the table. As its CEO, Eileen M. Fitzgerald has provided visionary leadership and is a trailblazer. She expects the best of the 235 NeighborWorks member organizations and provides the tools and support to get there. One of the proudest moments for AAFE is when we became a member of the NeighborWorks family, and one of my proudest moments as the Board President is being able to present Eileen M. Fitzgerald with the Dream of Equality Award.”

Asian Americans for Equality, a member of the NeighborWorks network since 2008, provides a broad array of housing, education and economic development services targeted to the Asian American and immigrant communities. AAFE is a recognized leader locally and nationally for its effective combination of grassroots advocacy, hands-on services to families and business, and high-quality affordable housing development.

“AAFE is always looking for new opportunities and new ways to serve your communities. Your recent approval as the first Community Loan Fund ever to be a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York is certainly an example of that creativity. NeighborWorks is proud to support AAFE and the communities you serve, and looks forward to a long and fruitful partnership for many years to come,” said Fitzgerald upon accepting the award.

Honored along with Fitzgerald were The Honorable Edwin Lee, Mayor of San Francisco; Louis Garden Acosta, Founder, President and CEO, El Puente; Errol Louis, Journalist and Host of NY1’s “Inside City Hall”; and Chanchanit Martorell, Executive Director, Thai Community Development Center, Los Angeles.

This year, the Lunar Celebration marks the year of the dragon, and started with a colorful, rousing dance by AAFE’s youth group in full costume.
