NeighborWorks America Offers Five Tips as New Homebuying Season Begins

$73.8 Million Awarded Through National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program to Help Nearly 190,000 Homeowners
Today NeighborWorks America announced that 73,870,078 million has been awarded to 32 state housing finance agencies (HFAs), 18 HUD-approved housing counseling intermediaries, and 86 community-based NeighborWorks organizations to provide counseling to families and individuals facing the threat of foreclosure. Just four months after the sixth round of National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling (NFMC) Program funds were appropriated; communities across our country will be able to put the funds to immediate use.

NeighborWorks America Warns Homeowners That Rescue Scams May Sound Like New Government Foreclosure Help Programs
The Loan Modification Scam Prevention Network(LMSPN) in conjunction with National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), March 4-11 is alerting homeowners to combat loan modification scams, especially those that may appear to be help from one of the various new foreclosure assistance programs recently announced by the government. This effort, led by NeighborWorks' nationa l Loan Modification Scam Alert campaign, the Homeownership Preservation Foundation's Homeowner's HOPE Hotline and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law's Prevent Loan Scams campaign, is designed to help homeowners protect themselves against loan modification scams, find trusted help and report illegal activity to authorities. Since the coalition's launch two years ago, more than 21,000 people have reported loan scams in the Lawyers' Committee's national Loan Modification Scam database, and it’s believed that many more homeowners have been affected. Loan Modification Scams Highlighted During Top Frauds Press Conference in New York as Part of National Consumer Protection Week
Today, the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (PreventLoanScams.org) and NeighborWorks America (LoanScamAlert.org) highlighted the ongoing foreclosure rescue scam crisis during a press conference to identify top consumer complaints in New York.  During this National Consumer Protection Week event, representatives offered guidance on avoiding financial scams, including loan modification scams.
